Tom and Nicole, Meet Greg and Julie

by Mary Beth Bonacci

This is the story of Greg and Julie and Tom and Nicole. Actually, I don’t exactly know Tom and Nicole’s story, except what I’ve seen on the Enquirer headlines as I’m paying for my groceries. But Tom Cruise and Nicole Kidman represent the recent rash of supposedly happy, long-married Hollywood couples who are suddenly calling it quits. Other examples include Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid, Kim Basinger and Alec Baldwin, and Demi Moore and Bruce Willis. I don’t know their stories, either.

Beating the Odds

by Bridget Maher

All too often today we hear about marriages ending in divorce. Not only are we inundated by the media with divorce stories, but we also all know someone among our family and friends who’s gone through a divorce. Yet we rarely hear about couples who were heading for divorce, but then decided to work it out. Here’s a story about one couple who, by the grace of God, were able to save their marriage.

Mary Always Leads Us To Jesus

by Caroline Schermerhorn

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see that marriage and family life in our culture are under assault. Three years ago, Greg and Julie Alexander were about to add their ten-year marriage to that growing pile of promises made and broken in holy matrimony. Despite the suffering in their children, and their own broken hearts, they had convinced themselves that everything would work out best this way.

Marriage and Family

by Fr. Roy Cimagala

It’s something that we should not take for granted. The institutions of marriage and family, as we know them in the original, i.e., as taught by natural law and by the Catholic Church, should always be defended and protected. There are tendencies springing sporadically at the moment in many places, and even right here in our country, that tend to undermine the very nature of these basic elements in our lives.

We have to keep in mind that once these institutions are denatured, some radical transformation in the lives of both individual persons and society in general, will also take place.

HELPING MAKE MARRIAGES WORK ~ Alexander House Emphasizes Communication, Sacraments and Prayer

(Interview with Greg Alexander of The Alexander House)

The writings of John Paul II have inspired a number of Church apostolates dedicated to strengthening the institution of marriage. Once such apostolate is the Alexander House of Austin. ZENIT interviewed program co-founder Greg Alexander about the state of marriage today and how troubled marriages can be transformed.

Marriage Workshop Underscores Need for Prayer and Willingness to Forgive

by Ed Lopez

Believing that their marriage was surely on the road to divorce, Greg and Julie and Alexander spoke with their priest for nearly 45 minutes, explaining why they couldn’t stay married. The priest listened patiently, then asked a few questions, including: What is God’s plan for marriage? “We don’t know, “Greg remembers responding. “We’re Catholics. We go to church every Sunday.” “I suggest you go back to do some studying before coming to this decision,” the priests counseled. Years later, the Alexanders have a healthy marriage and have established a nonprofit apostolate, the Alexander House in Austin, Texas, dedicated to the education and enrichment of marriage and family life.

The Alexander House rules: equip couples to build a Christ-centered marriage — New ministry being made available in Denver Archdiocese

by Elizabeth DeLine

A few years ago, Matt and Mindy Dalton knew there was a war going on but they didn’t know how close it was to their own home in Colorado. The couple, longtime parishioners at St. Thomas More Church in Centennial, didn’t know the enemy was called “divorce” or that many couples suffer its consequences.

It was only after Matt read an article in the New York Times, reporting married households to be in the minority, that he realized American society was under attack. He was struck by the fatal trend of married couples divorcing, which in turn affected not only the individual couples but destroyed entire families as well.

Couples by Candlelight to assist in diocesan marriage initiative

By Penny Wiegert, Editor

DIOCESAN – As the old saying goes, “Marriage takes three to make it work—a man, a woman and God. The Diocesan Commission on Marriage is committed to helping couples include God in the marriage equation by offering several evenings called “Couples by Candlelight.”

Assignment “by Candlelight” provides evening of insight, fun

by Lynne Conner, Observer Correspondent

In the 20 years that I have worked as an Observer correspondent, the events I have covered have always been varied and interesting. But my latest assignment added an extra dose of insight, fun and some romance into what could have been another dull Saturday night at home. I am referring to the “Couples by Candlelight” presentation, held Nov. 22, at St. Rita Parish in Rockford. Sponsored by the Diocesan Commission on Marriage, it featured a talk by Greg Alexander.
